History of McDade's Nursery

The original nursery building was erected in the early 1970’s by Tom Hopkins.  John and Loretta McDade purchased the nursery in March 1977 and created a very successful growing, landscaping and retail operation.

The business quickly expanded to become a destination garden center drawing customers from the Cedar Creek Lake community and cities of Athens, Corsicana, Kaufman, Canton, Dallas/Fort Worth and beyond.

The nursery received national acclaim in 1988 when the editors of Nursery Manager magazine featured an article on growing techniques practiced at the nursery.

In 2000, John and Loretta retired and sold the Nursery to Mark and Erin Countryman and the name was changed to Lakeview Nursery and Garden Center.

John and Loretta returned from retirement in 2008 to repurchase the nursery and changed the business name back to McDade’s.

In late 2009 the Nursery was purchase by its current owners, Stephen and Shirley Gent.  As the McDade’s brand name is so popular and well known the decision was made to keep the business as McDade’s Nursery.
